Our Programs

Our objective at Norfolk Karate Academy is to help you develop into a confident, competent, and complete martial artist. We use the time-tested method of building a strong foundation in one art and supplementing your training with other approaches to expand your knowledge and skills. Three martial arts programs are currently offered at NKA.

1The NKA Junior Program is designed to meet the needs of children from ages 5-13 and to increase their ability to pay attention to detail. While the Tang Soo Do foundation is the same as the Adult Program, the focus of this program is different. There is greater emphasis placed on free-sparring and competition. Also, the basic self-defense techniques taught in this program are geared toward escaping rather than controlling an attacker.

2.  The NKA Adult Program emphasizes improving overall fitness and flexibility, striking with power and balance, practical self-defense techniques, and forms practice for general conditioning. Tang Soo Do (a standing, striking art) forms the foundation for this program and we supplement your training with Gracie Jiu-Jitsu (a grappling art with submissions). Classes consist of a warm-up, striking and blocking drills, self-defense, sparring, forms training and conditioning drills. Students generally attend 2 to 3 classes per week and rank advancement is dependent upon each student’s abilities and attendance.

3.  We also offer the Gracie CombativesTM Program for students who either want to train exclusively in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu or add this program to their current training regimen at NKA at no extra charge.
